Figure Drawing, week 1

Last night was our first Figure Drawing class, and I am very happy with the drawings my students made.

We began with gesture and drawing the simple skeleton, and from there I showed them how to thicken each section, drawing what they see. The students had no previous figure drawing experience.

Next Tuesday I’m going to introduce them to shading.

Will be teaching figure drawing Tuesday nights

Tuesday nights from June 9th – July 24th I will be teaching figure drawing in Soho through the Educational Alliance. It’s going to be good, tell a friend!

Figure Drawing
This beginning course is designed as an introduction to basic drawing techniques and drawing the nude model. The Instructor will provide fundamental techniques to train the eye how to draw what you see (not what you think you see). Basic drawing skills will be taught such as how use line and shading, and how to draw in proportion. We will primarily work on pencil and charcoal on newsprint and large drawing paper.
Tuesdays, 6:30 8:50pm,
6/9-7/24
Location: the Compleat Sculptor, 90 Vandam Street
6 sessions, $230
Instructor: Seth Mulvey

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it

I made an ink drawing today which I will color later. It’s for a show in Crown Heights this saturday. It’s going to be a lot of fun, you should come by. It will be on April 28th at 721 Franklin Avenue. 8pm. there will be home-brewed beer, videos, entertainment, and fine people.

Puzzle pieces

I painted these today, they’re part of a larger puzzle painting for the gutbox collective show. I don’t usually work like this so bright and geometric. I’ve been looking at Virginia Elwood’s work and a lot of other tattoo work, and have been wanting to paint + draw some of the tattoo imagery for a while. Where the panther is is someone’s neck which was supposed to be kept dark, so I worked within that shape. I wanted to do something similar for the dark shape below which is Uli’s hair, but no icons came to mind. Maybe I’ll come back to it. I’ve also been looking at Steven Crane’s work, he’s my neighbor.

I’m in a new studio space and it’s great! the room is good and bright and quiet. the light is very good and there is a tree outside my windows, which I’m thankful for. I usually hear lovebird doves but today there was another kind of bird near but I don’t know it from its song.

Also I haven’t been on facebook at all in a month or so, I don’t know if I’m missing any messages but I’m happier without it.  phone numbers and email are plenty.

Pr 10:4 He becometh poor that worketh with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

oh, ps. I also painted a mouse offering a flower to the big foot it is in love with, it’s about true love which cannot be hidden where it exists and cannot be found where it does not.

I love this

It’s by Lizz Hickey, I like her pictures and this one is so good!

a bear

I’m really into painting bears. this one is on a collaborative panel with I think Ray Sell, Nick Dyball, and John Hagan, it’s for the art group I am a part of called Gutbox and we have a show at Lambert fine art on Stanton in May.

snake skull

I’ve been looking at a lot of tattoos and I had this idea for you know the one image with a snake wrapped around a skull? well I wanted to one with the snake being exploded from a bright skull. so I was sketching it from my head but it looks like a bunch of penises which I don’t like. I showed it to Jess and she disagrees. check out his fangs being broken and snot flying out of his nose!

Untitled drawing

This drawing is from a while ago. I volunteered it for Heather Heart’s auction but no one took it. Oh well, it’ll be mine still.
